Some time ago there was a discussion about finger prostheses on the ASSH list server. I mentioned that we had done Branemark implants for a few people. This is the success. He is a middle aged gentleman who sustained this injury in a grass cutting injury. He wanted functional prostheses and was willing to be a guinea pig!
I have done the primary implants in two other patients. One was a young lady. The stump I believe in retrospect was too short and the skin moved so that adequate immobilisation could not be obtained. The second patient, a thumb, faile to comply with clinic visits, etc and has now asked for a further appointment to remove the implant after several years of non attendance.
I cannot stress enough that this is not in routine clinical use at this point. We are still evaluating but preliminary reports from this patient are highly positive.
